Home Depot was founded in 1978 by Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank. With the investment of Ken Langone Marcus and Blank set off to
create a customer service oriented do it yourself home improvement store. Their collective goal was to create the ultimate one stop shopping center for do-it-yourselfers. The first store was a little over 60,000 square feet, dwarfing other stores coming in at a mere 25,000
feet.
Home Depot by far had the best customer service in the industry. The knowledgeable employees would guide customers through difficult projects. The knowledge of employees had to be extremely extensive ranging from laying tile to roofing a house. The Home Depot even started offering clinics for customers to come and learn certain trades.
In 1981, Home Depot went public on NASDAQ and moved to the New York Stock Exchange in 1984. In 1989 they celebrated the opening of the
100th store, a huge milestone for the home improvement giants. Their next achievement came in 1994 when they entered Canada with their first out of country store. Then in 2006 The Home Depot entered China by taking over a 12 store chain known formerly as The Home Way. Now the company sets the bar for do it yourself stores everywhere. accompanied by any tool you could ever wish to have in your garage. You can buy anything from a new refrigerator to a new chainsaw. The Home Depot now offers subcontracting as well.
